EOI for the Temple and Effigy builds 2026

🔥

Do you like to watch big things burn?

🔥

Of course you do! It’s right there in the name we call ourselves, right? Ok, but do you like to build the things that everyone watches burn? Do you have a bold idea that works with this year’s theme of AETHER: The Fifth Element? Tell us all about it, and we just might help you make it a reality!

We know how much imagination and effort goes in to builds like this, so there are two $2000 grants available, one for Temple and one for Effigy. If you are a creative and building person, fill out the EOI so we can all enjoy watching your creation become ash!

Entries close Sunday, 26th July.

Details

  • Theme: The 5th Element
  • Timing: The Effigy will be burnt on Saturday night, the Temple will be burnt on Sunday night.
  • Entries close Sunday, 26th July

Criteria:

  • Funding of $2,000 is available for each build, awarded to successful candidates.
  • Structures are to be a maximum of 3m tall or wide.
  • Please be aware that the Third Degree site is within a national park and that there are a lot of trees in close proximity.
  • Do not use plywood, chipboard, MDF or any other materials that may cause a fire storm.
  • No treated timbers or other materials that give off toxic fumes.
  • Our preference is to use recycled / second hand timbers as much as possible.
  • There is only one burn scar allowed on the Third Degree site, so the Effigy can be built in place but the Temple will need to be moved into place after construction; please consider modular options in your design and build.

Preference will be given to:

  • Ideas that are iconic, emotive and spectacular.
  • Designs that make clever use of fire and / or contain and control flames effectively.
  • Artists with experience building large scale, burnable art (note: if you don’t have experience but have a great idea, we encourage you to still apply – we may be able to support you with the engineering and fire aspects.)

Build artists must bring everything they need to construct the Effigy or Temple onsite, including tools and support crew. All artists and crew must purchase a ticket – art funds are not to be used to purchase a ticket.

Note that there is only 1 day for set up and build onsite before gates open at Third Degree, and 1 day for pack down. Artists and crews must comply with the Third Degree’s Leave No Trace policy.

Before submitting your application, please read our Art Guidelines

EOIs close Sunday, 26th July 2026. Successful candidates will be advised by the end of July. Please be aware that there will be further requirements that will be discussed in detail if you are successful.
